Daniel Cappell is a dedicated aviation professional with many years of experience across the three sides of airport concessions – airport operator, retailer and supplier. He is one of only of three executives worldwide to have held senior executive positions with an international brand, with duty free operators and with airport authorities.
Daniel’s expertise includes commercial negotiations, contract management and commercial strategy. He joined aviation consultancy Leigh Fisher (part of Jacobs Engineering Group) in August 2018 to help develop their North American concession consulting business and is currently working with Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, Ontario International Airport, Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Jacksonville International Airport.
Before joining Leigh Fisher Daniel was Acting Chief Commercial Officer at Abu Dhabi Airports Company. He managed all real estate rentals and lease agreements, including the commercial businesses within the existing three terminals. He developed and implemented the strategy and business plan for development across 11.4sq km of land, maximising Free Zone benefits and financial returns to the business. He implemented a commercial strategy and managed RFPs and tenders for the new Midfield Terminal Complex across retail, F&B, lounges, hotel, car parking, car rental, advertising, experiential zones, ATMs, foreign exchange and VIP facilities.
Previously Daniel was General Manager for Retail and Parking at Melbourne Tullamarine Airport. A member of the Executive Committee, he reported to the CEO and was responsible for all non-aeronautical income activities. He was responsible for the creation of a commercial strategy for the airport’s expansion and development.
Daniel’s executive experience in duty free came as General Manager Operations with Aer Rianta International–Middle East and as Deputy Managing Director with Abu Dhabi Duty Free & In-flight Catering. Prior to these retailing roles he spent more than 20 years with Nestlé; during the last ten of those years he established and then managed Nestlé International Travel Retail, and is widely recognised as the driver behind establishing confectionery as a core category within the global duty free world.
